The SINU teaching classroom on Mediterranean Diet for young scientists from around the world
Exactly nine years after that Mediterranean Diet was enrolled within the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this global lifestyle is growing rapidly, even in countries far removed from our food tradition. The world scientific community, convened by the Italian Society of Human Nutrition, is mobilized to study “in the field” the most healthy and sustainable food model where it was codified almost 50 years ago.
A select group of young researchers from China, Malaysia, Spain, Holland, Germany, Turkey, The Netherlands and Italy traveled to Cilento, to the area where the American physiologist and nutritionist Ancel Keys “discovered” the Mediterranean Diet, to acquire the essential elements of knowledge on the world’s healthiest, safest and most sustainable global nutrition model.
The occasion came from the 2nd Ancel Keys International Seminar on Mediterranean Diet and Sustainable Dietary Models, an occasion for comparing and sharing of knowledge among prestigious Italian and foreign experts.
The seminar took place in Ascea Marina from September 30th to October 4th and was promoted by the Italian Society of Human Nutrition in synergy with the University of Naples Federico II, the University Hospital Federico II, the Institute of Food Sciences of the National Research Council in Avellino, with the collaboration of the University of Salerno, the Neuromed Institute in Pozzilli, the Cilento Park, Vallo di Diano and Alburni, the Pioppi Association for the Mediterranean Diet, Food and Lifestyle “Ancel Keys” under the patronage of the UNESCO Club and the Rotary Club of Vallo della Lucania.
The novelty and the characterizing element of the Seminar was the innovative method for the transfer of knowledge from the “experienced” Experts to the young participants, who not only attended the lectures but were also able to informally interact with the invited speakers, reporting their working experiences. Special sections have been dedicated to applicative activities where the young participants were organized in groups and elaborated small projects under the guidance of expert tutors.
The objective of the Seminar is to export the principles of the Mediterranean Diet and, again, to make known the excellences of the agricultural productions of the territory. In such a way, it is possible to favor the development of a network of researchers and producers involved in the definition of projects useful to counteract the tendency that is taking place for too long now, towards the progressive departure from the traditional Mediterranean model and to the acquisition of unhealthy eating habits that have fueled the current epidemic of obesity.
